In economics, the assumption that "people are rational beings" is really a definition. It means that people maximize their interest the way THEY define it.
Economically rational certainly does not mean scientifically rational: Chinese traditional medicine is a good example.
Even in charity work, people make decisions as rational economic beings: Bill Gates donated billions and is in charge of a charity now. This doesn't mean he is going to waste his money. Given choices, he still buys products that are inexpensive and of higher quality.
You can't argue over definitions.
