I don't think Chinese is entirely correct on this announcement. They failed to report wheat gluten that was exported. And another thing I noticed a day ago is that FDA also baned the gluten from Netherland where is said the Chinese wheat gluten was transported to the US.
Anyway here is the reported announcement from China:
美方：阻止从大陆进口麦麸 中方：宠物中毒与中国无关

【本报北京4月3日综合报道】由于加入麦麸的宠物食品导致数起猫狗死亡事件，美国食品和药物管理局已决定阻止进口由中国制造的这种麦麸。截至上周，食品和药物管理局已经接到8000多起有关这一宠物食品系列的投诉，不过该局拒绝透露究竟有多少宠物因此而死亡。
中国国家质检总局3日发布消息称，该局经过初步调查得出结论：中国没有向美国、加拿大出口过小麦、麦麸等宠物食品原料。引起美国宠物中毒死亡的“氨基蝶呤”未在中国农业部门登记。中国未批准使用含有这种有毒成分的灭鼠药。美国宠物中毒与中国无关。
经过中国国家质检总局调查，氨基蝶呤作为一种医用抗肿瘤药物，没有在中国农业部门作为农药或灭鼠药登记使用，因此在中国生产、加工、存放的小麦及其制品不会接触或被该有毒物质污染。同时经各地检验检疫机构调查，截止到2007年3月29日，中国从未出口小麦、麦麸到美国、加拿大。
中国国家质检总局有关负责人表示，该局正与美国驻华使馆保持密切联系，跟踪了解美国宠物食品污染事件的调查情况，视情况采取进一步措施。from ChinaPress.net
There is a triva that I read today, here is the excerpt:

So no one has been giving a shit when there have been 29 soldiers died since the recall of the pet food, meanwhile there have been only 16 pets died since.
The news from the US side isn't new today.
