我有个朋友在翻译莎士比亚,有下列问题搞不清,请帮忙看一下:

1.I. i. 86. (Act One, Scene One, Line 86) “emulate

pride” my question is, whose pride, Fortinbras or

Hamlet?

2.I. ii. 103: “a fault to nature, to reason most

absurd, whose common theme is death of fathers,”

“whose” refers to “nature” or “reason”?

3.I. ii. 122: “Be as ourselves in Denmark.”

4. 161: “or I do forget myself”

我的译文:不然我已把自己忘记(与“假如我没有忘记”,哪一个更好?)

卞之琳:我差点把自己都忘了。

5.II. ii. 104: “Thus it remains, the remainder

thus.” Can it be paraphrased as “ This is the way it

is; and what we have now.” as given by Roma Gill?

卞之琳的译文是: 这是下一步,

下一步就是这样。梁实秋的译文是:于是这便成为问题,而问题便是如此。

我的译文是:这就是现状,现状就是这样。

6.II.ii. 215: “You cannot, sir, take from me anything

that I will not more willingly part withal---except my

life, except my life , except my life .” Hamlet likes

his life to be taken away or not, by Polonius?

7.II. ii. 377: “at each ear a hearer” = “both of

you listen” as explained in the book by Roma Gill?

8.II. ii. 391: “each actor on his ass”, “ass’

means donkey or hip here?

9.III. ii. 175: “None wed the second but who kill’d

the first.” Does “who” refer to the second husband

or the woman herself”?

10.III. ii. 179: “ A second time I kill my husband

dead,” “my husband” refers to the first one or the

second one?

11.III. iv. 180: “I must be cruel only to be kind,”

to be kind to whom? His mother or Polonius or in

general?

12.IV. v. 33: “At his heels a stone.” Why put a

stone at his heels, what kind of stone, according to

the tradition, or burial custom?

13.IV. vi. 17: “in the grapple” what does

“grapple” means here---fighting, or grappling irons

thrown by pirates to draw alongside the Danish ship?

14.IV. vii. 11-12: “ The Queen his mother lives

almost by his looks,” what does “ by his looks”

means?

15.IV. vii. 56-7: “ If it be so, Laertes--- As how

should it be so, how otherwise?” what does “it”

refer to? Does it refer to Laertes’ resolution to

revenge Hamlet or the sudden coming back of Hamlet?

16.V. i. 63-4: “To contract---O--- the time for

---a---my behove, O methought there---a ---was

nothing---a---meet.”

17.V.ii. 171: “ it is the breathing time of day with

me.” “breathing time” means “ my time for exercise

of sword”?

18.V.ii. 220: “Let be.” Means “soft you now”, or

“leave it alone”?

19.V.ii. 309: “Look to the Queen there, ho!” what

does “ho” mean here? Does it mean “stop the play”

or just an interjection?

20.V. ii. 329: “O yet defend me, friends. I am but

hurt.” What does “but” mean here? Does it mean:

Only, or really or seriously?

21.V. ii. 367: “ Where is this sight?” what does “

where” mean here? Does it mean “what”?
