Gumi, how do you like this statement?
芦笛
I am sorry I was unable to browse the web yesterday at daytime because the web site was somehow inaccessible and I was too busy to try repeatedly. In the evening, my wife forestalled my attempt to crawl in. So I could only check your evidence just a moment ago.
I must admit here that you are right and I should of course do what I have promised. I will post up a Chinese statement to every BBS site I know. That means this forum, dajia, waiweitianxia, xinguancha, and boxun. If you are still not happy, I authorize you here to re-post it onto any forum you know.
Now here is the English version of my statement. Please read it carefully and let me know if you disagree with it. I will translate it into Chinese and post it up this evening.
Statement
Ludi
Last week, I had the displeasure of arguing about an English question with Mr Gumi who is notorious for his dishonesty. In an English poster I wrote to Mr Jiujie, I made a typing mistake and wrote a phrase "making momey". Mr Gumi seized this God-sent opportunity to humiliate me, asking me sarcastically: "what means 'making momey'?"
Though living in an English-speaking country for more than a decade, I had never heard of this kind of question. So I thought Mr Gumi was wrong and told him that he should have asked me "what does 'making momey' mean?"
In the hot argument that followed, as always, Mr Gumi exhibited his dishonesty and used it as his magic weapon. For example, when Mr Joke intervened and said the verb "to mean" could also mean "to cause", Mr Gumi immediately claimed :
"If I tell you that I did mean to ask you 'what causes making momey' what can you say? Read the whole text carefully and see what sense it can make?"
Everyone could see that he denied here that he had meant to ask me "what's the meaning of 'making momey'". But moments later, when he found from the web that "what means sth" could be equivalent to "what's the meaning of sth", he immediately bounced back to the standpoint that he had been trying to evade, declaring most triumphantly that both Mr Joke and I were "losers".
Having checked the evidence he presented as shown below:
"What means 'man pages'?
The man pages, or manual pages are a set of documentation that is available from the blackgold.tamu.edu command-line. Telnet to blackgold and then type man followed the name of the command you would like to learn more about. You can also type 'man -k keyword' to look for commands that might have something to do with the keyword you entered."
I now realize that I was wrong and Mr Gumi correct. Indeed, "what means sth" could replace "what's the meaning of sth" or "what does sth mean". Let it known that I am all too happy to admit my mistake and I thank Mr Gumi profusely for his help with my grasp of English as a living language.
Taking this opportunity, I would also like to express my hope that Mr Gumi be inspired by my courageous and lofty moral example to learn how a decent man should behave in a debate. For a start, he can do something about his recent libels on me. The week before last, he made up a series of defaming rumors libeling me. Despite my repeated protests, he never had the courage to face the consequences, and stand out to clarify the issue, let alone admitting his misconduct and apologizing to the victim. Now I believe it is high time that Mr Gumi started to learn how to be a gentleman, though I know this hope is extremely slim, as his dictionary does not seem to have the word of "honor". As a result, he interprets "being intelligent" as "being cunning" and "fighting bravely" as "fighting dirty".
