Why are there so many “Fa Hai”s?
You guys may remember the Peking Opera “Romance of White Snake” (bai she zhuan) in which a beautiful female snake married a guy named Xu Xian. They lived happily until a jealous monk, Fa Hai, interfered. Out of his “justified anger” (yi fen) and conviction that a man should never marry a demon, he destroyed their marriage.
I saw Fa Hai the other day when I was reading Mr Xiao Feng’s piece “立此存照”. 链接 Having finished it, I did not know whether I should laugh or cry. Apparently, like Fa Hai, he was gripped by “justified anger” based on his firm conviction that a woman should never marry a man she did not love.
I cannot help but to ask Mr Xiao the following questions:
How do you know that woman does not love Prof Yang?
Even if she does not love Prof Yang, what does this have to do with you? I thought it was Prof Yang’s concern, not yours. What business do you have in this kind of private affair?
Who gives you the right to condemn Mrs Yang (or former Miss Weng) so indignantly?
Do you really believe that by condemning Mrs Yang, you are doing Prof Yang a great favor? Suppose that Mrs Yang did not love Prof Yang, and Prof Yang knew it. Still he wanted to marry her because he could not live without her. In this situation, he would be greatly upset if he happened to read your piece which hurt his idol so badly. Is that what you hoped by writing that piece? Is that your idea of “justice”?
According to you, marriage without love is not only a sin, but also a crime. So why don’t you appeal to the American as well as Chinese governments, asking them to outlaw such marriage?
Have you ever heard of the expression: "Marriage is women’s real career?"
Finally, let me tell you what strikes me most by reading your masterpiece: It tells me that wherever he/she goes, once a Chinese, always a Chinese.
