I haven't seen a detailed describation of the whole process of your PC's problem, so it is difficult to give you a suggestion. Here are 2 words for you:
1)When it is really a mechanical failure, in most cases it is a problem of degree. It is not totally broken. A little lucky shake and reboot may sometimes make it work again. You shall have patience when you don't want to pay heavily for it . Even it works again, you must backup all documents immediately, because the harddisk is not trustworthy any more before fixxing the problem.
2)When no layman does wrong work to your disk after failure, datas can sleep safely in the bad disk. This kind of technical problem may be easy for a harddisk worker, but not to others, even he is a Phd. learner of computer science.
