Abstract:

Paper presented at the Public Lecture Series on 31 August 1998. The author examines the debate as to whether mathematics is an art. He concludes that mathematics may be better regarded as an art that has Relative or Progressive Completeness only. This is expounded through the statement: 'Mathematics is world of islands of Completeness within a sea of Incompleteness'. Only the sea is boundless.
