Iraqi Governing Council Selects Member to Replace Slain Council Chief

BAGHDAD, Iraq May 17, 2004 — The Iraqi Governing Council selected Ghazi Mashal Ajil al-Yawer, a civil engineer from the northern city of Mosul, to replace council chief Izzadine Saleem, who was slain in a suicide car bombing on Monday, a council member said.
Al-Yawer, a Sunni Muslim, was chosen at a council meeting shortly after the blast, according to council member Mahmoud Othman.
The position of council chief rotates monthly. Al-Yawer will serve as head of the U.S.-appointed council until the transfer of sovereignty to Iraqis on June 30.
