His definition is the standard one in the western
world.
陶渊明 wouldn't be an intellectual if he was only
a Major of a small county. He was because he
was a poet.
Likewise, a IT worker with a Ph. D. in computer
science is NOT an intellectual, if the only thing
he does is engineering stuff.
In West, many people with a high degree are not
qualified for the title intellectual.
Give you another example, the famous mathematician
Fermat is an intellectual, because he is a
mathematician even though he did mathematics
as a hobby. He wouldn't be an intellectual if
he was just an official in city court.
Like it or not, the definition of intellectual
is a very narrow one.
Finally, Lao Kan is an intellectual, not because
he is 看好戏, but for what he does for his real
job (which I happen to know).
