1.The devil is in the details:
(Actions
are more complicated than words.)例如:
When it comes to writing the project, the devil is in the details.
It seemed very easy at first, then we discovered the devil was in the details.
The devil is(或will be) in the details if we try to improve our health care
system.
2.take ( it ) with a grain of salt:
(have to think
about; be cautious and use your judgement because it may not be true.)(it
Take what Mr. Chen said with a grain of salt.
I will take her story with a grain of salt.
)
3.leave a lot to be desired:意思是
不如想像中那么好 (not as good as I expected) 如果说:"It left a lot to be
desired." 也就是其中许多事被弃置或忽略了 (a lot of things have been left
out) 这是一种比较婉转客气的说法 (gentle way to say) 因为不说:「这是很差
劲!」(It is awful!) 例如:
The dinner left a lot to be desired.
His welcome leaves a lot to be desired.
My student's behavior has left a lot to be desired.
由于这句话本来含有否定的语气,所以通常不说:"does not leave a lot to be
desired.",也不说:"leave a little bit to be desired." He left
me a lot to be desired."
This is the first time his behavior has not left a lot to be desired.(他
Based on my previous experience I think his behavior will
leave a lot to be desired.
4.The ball is in your court.
(It is your turn to
do something;it is your decision now;you have to take next step.) 例如:
I have done everything I can;now the ball is in your court.
The lawyer has presented this case;now the ball is in judge's court.
I have done my best to explain my position;now the ball is in your court.
5.Say it with flowers:
(A slogan used in many flower shops. It means when you want
to express your emotion, send flowers.)例如:
All flower shops want you to say it with flowers.
In order to express his love to his girl friend, he will say it with flowers.
6.Behave or else!
You behave
or something else! You will
be punished or you will take consequence if you don't listen. 例如:
The father said to his son, “Behave or else!”(老爸对儿子说:「规矩些,
Normally, the boss will not directly say to the employees, “Behave or else!”
7.crime does not pay:这是说,犯罪是划不来,不值得去冒险,因为最后都会被捉到。(Not
worth committing crime because you will get caught eventually.) 例如:
Kids should be told that crime does not pay.
If everyone believes that crime does not pay, then there will be no crime.
The bank robber thought that crime did pay.(抢银行的人认为犯罪划得来)(因
A very small percent of people feel that crime does pay.
