The only thing missing from China's 60th anniversary was the public

The 60th birthday party held by China’s communist authorities was staged with great ceremony, goose-stepping （糊涂：走正步） troops and spectacular fireworks. What was missing were ordinary people.
The fact is that more than half a century after Mao’s rule, and more than 20 years after the Tiananmen Square massacre, the Chinese government still doesn’t trust its own subjects.
There were no spontaneous street parties and hundreds of students, civil rights campaigners and academics were harassed and arrested.
With their growing economy, increasing power and staggering Olympics China has much to celebrate… but not the freedom of its people.
