November 10th 2003
Dear students
This letter is from your teachers who are members of ASTE .
We will be taking some industrial action this week and maybe next week. We are doing this because, although our union has been negotiating with our employer for 7 months, we can’t get an agreement. We have had 16 days of meetings and also a day of mediation but it didn’t work.
We don’t want to lose any of our working conditions because we want to be able to teach you well. We want a small pay increase to cover the cost of living.
Our employers want to reduce our working conditions and they aren’t offering us a pay increase. So, we think we have no choice but to take industrial action.
When you see us on the picket line , please support us. Please come and join us: you will learn a lot about working in New Zealand! We care about you and we care about being able to do our job well.

ASTE is the Association of Staff In Tertiary Education. It is the union for Polytechnic teachers
Industrial action is when workers do something to protest against their employers such as have a strike or “work to rule”, stop doing parts of their jobs
negotiating means having meetings, talking and trying to agree.
Mediation is when a “mediator” – a person who is neutral- tries to help both sides to agree.
Working conditions includes the hours you must work, when you must work, your holiday and sick pay and other important things to help you do your job well.

2] Tell the CEO
-----------------------
ASTE members on the Collective Agreement (CA) have voted overwhelmingly to take strike action to preserve their terms and conditions. Therefore ALL ASTE members on the CA will be on strike tomorrow (Wednesday).
Frustrated? TELL THE CEO! This action could be avoided if the CEO would give the authority to remove the contentious claims on our terms and conditions and offer us a pay increase equitable with our colleagues on individual agreements. ASTE believes that a settlement could have been achieved last week when we went to mediation but the employers refused to move on anything!
ASTE is open to approaches by the employers to avoid strike action right up to the last moment.

3] Student Union supports the strike

UNITEC Student Union has come out in support of strike action by academic staff. It is issuing a press release supporting the strike, plans to join the picket line on Wednesday, and is loaning ASTE a PA system for use on the line. We think it is fantastic that the Union supports us so vigorously.
