Believe it or not, those donkey men can speak Chinese. Lots of shop owners also can speak Chinese, such as "请光頋". If you say no, thanks. They would say "不要紧, 回头再来". kao!
Actually I saw a lot of Chinese in Peking dialect. There are 4-5 Chinese restaurants that were not there 13 years ago. However, I saw the truck with CA license plate in front. Apparently,the Chinese owner is in CA.
It's very easy to go back to the US side. You only have to show the driver's license. They x-rayed my bag and took out an apple out, that was the US apple i took from the hotel. So I told the guy that it was a US apple. He smiled and said he could not tell.
I took the tram that they call trolley locally. It was only $5 by return to take you to the border. You can walk to the downtown of Tinuana in 15 minutes. It's a city of 3 million people and it's americanized.
