one explanation is that he wrote so many anti-communist articles before and was rather famous before his identity was revealed. Since he probably still has relatives in China and wants to keep his option of visiting China, he needs to (at least he thinks he needs to) do "penance", so to speak.

If this indeed the case, then it is understandable and I have sympathy for that.
