Let's take an example in Mao's era to early 1990.
Mao's era is frozen, no bonus, no pay raise, we can ignore.
in 1980s
if two guys, one started working in a factory, the other went to 4-year college and started work in the same factory. the first guy because of his senority, he probably could earn twice much as the new college boy. And in that time, there weren't any comercial apartment, the one worked longer had superioty to get better apartment assignment. All policy lean to so-called working class. In 80s, there was a typical divide in a factory: first line, workers, and 2nd line all regarded as suppoting role in production, including all engineers, normally the first line can double paid that that of 2nd line. these were simply facts then. and it was stupid.
What you saw probably some very prominent intellectes. they were professors even before Culture Revolution, Yes, they got quite high salary. those were really lucky fews. For a long time, there wasn't a raise or promotion. My parents graduated in 1960s, get first raise was probably in late 1970s.
