(After I wrote this piece of crap, I read your post again, I probably took your opinion wrong in the first place; anyway, it’s my two cents)
I can’t believe that so many people blame the moral decay in China. It is astonishing when the blames from people like you (but I’m happy you’re back). Why couldn’t you take it as a sign that China finally has a chance going back to normal.
Moral issues are important in human institutions. Big deal! As a matter of facts, traditional moral ethics collapsed long back (even before CCP took over); the moral dogmas instilled for generations and permeated on that land for decades were just unrealistic and dangerous. It wasn’t good-old time during 1950s and 1960s and 1970s in China but a mad house full of hypocrites and informants.
In the history of mankind when war ends, most people can go back to their normal lives, to make a fortune, to make babies, to enjoy and suffer whatever belongs to them. However, this didn’t happen in China, 1949; she went through a different path. Within decades, the country was a military camp. The communism ideology urges a nation running as a well-oiled machine; and its rosy unrealistic attitude toward human nature needs highly-collective bonds among individuals (I’m not a big fan of Marxism, and learned it through a tailored Chinese version, these views are possibly wrong). There’re certain virtues about military settings: discipline, efficiency and special-bond among men. So, it is not uncommon that virtually all communism countries had military or semi-military institutions.
There would not be too many arguments that military discipline and efficiency when applied to a nation could severely destroy any vital economy. So does military buddy bonds damage human dynamics in a normal society.
Hollywood had romanticized and dramatized military buddy bonds for decades, the newer ones are HBO’ “Band of Brothers”, “Save Private Ryan” and blah, blah. It is yet another fact that almost everyone knows, from director to actors, and even real soldiers, that the bond can only happen in the military settings, especially in the war zones. In 21th century America, I still can hear the heroic stories about soldiers in Iraq throwing their bodies to grenades, or a modern version, IEDs. Buddy bond is crucial for surviving in a war zone.
On the contrary, it isn’t always a live and death situation in civilian life, other wonderful characters of human nature prevail: greedy, selfishness, and blah, blah; I do believe that these aspects of human nature are critical for the civilization. The assumption of a civilized government is not based on that men are angles but rather men have sins. The effective way to count our sinful acts is simply others’ sinful acts. Eventually, acceptable boundaries among individuals can be drawn.
So to speak, it is a morally bankrupt China, but my thumbs are still up. Give it a try, give her some time, it could be better however chances might be slim.
