Brown says, legally, processed pet food can have almost anything in it, and it usually goes under the guise of "meat meal."
“It could be the entrails, it could be animal digest, it could be bones, it could be carcasses, it could be the beaks, the feet, the feathers, the hoofs, the hair, the eyeballs,” she says. “When they need to punch up protein sources, they're allowed to use hair.”
Brown says the prime problem in this recall isn't the wheat gluten itself, but that the food wasn't held to high enough standards before it went to pets.
