I did just recently and am glad to read about it on Sin-Yaw Wang's blog:
I first saw Proof in New York with its original cast. It was a play certainly not about mathematics, but the math backdrop delighted the engineer in me. I enjoyed Jennifer Jason Leigh's live and engaging acting greatly. The setting was very simple as the porch of the house Catherine lived in and that strengthened the acting. I told Fred, the resident mathematician, about it. He later saw it with a different cast and speculated that Riemann Hypothesis was what Catherine was proving.
I was intrigued to see it on the flight movie list on my way back to Beijing. I knew about the movie adaptation but never really wanted to watch it. What's the point? I watched the play, the plot is not complicated, and I don't want to ruin the memory. (My kids teased me when I couldn't decide which Phantom was better. The comparison tormented me.
Even through the environment of an airplane, Gwen Paltrow touched me more as a loving daughter than an eccentric math genius. The father-daughter relationship moved me, now that I am a father with daughters approaching her age. I appreciate that adult-like relationship deeper. I also felt the complicated emotion of dealing with aging parents. When she said, "I am happy that he is dead." I understood that deep in my heart.
Maybe this is the power of movie over theater. In addition to voice, that theater acting relies upon, movie actors can do intimate dialogs and close-up facial expressions. For Proof, that can be an advantage. Again, this is not a movie about math, but geeks will definitely enjoy it better.
I was strolling on the street near this Taipei hotel and a banner ad (right click to see a larger image) hit me. Guess what! Proof, adapted for Chinese, will be on stage next week here. Wow!
