The same American democracy also allowed slavery during the first 85 years of its existence. Then they fought a war over it during which 650000 people died. The anti-slavery president was then assassinated right after the war.

The ancient Greek city states also had democracy and slavery side by side.

Democracy reflects the prevalent moral standard of the time, not some ideal perfection in government. As Winston Churchill once said, democracy is the worst system except everything else.
