When I referred to [知之为知之,不知为不知,是知也。], I was referring to the claims of various religions. That they should be humble and admit ignorance when they really don’t know. I really don’t know what you are responding to here. Really.

[成年人都该知道,科学不是万能的,世上有许多事,科学根本无法解决,诸如是否有上帝,是否有幽灵,心灵感应,telepathy,等等。这就是我为何说科学和宗教不搭界。]

Really, who are the adults you are referring to? And when did telepathy become a religious issue, instead of a scientific one? I am not a Christian either and I was just advocating Confucius’s position of [知之为知之,不知为不知,是知也。] concerning the existence and the nature of God. What phenomenon, especially the repeatable worldly phenomena, cannot be studied with the scientific method? And if not, what other methods are available? Finally, you can’t prove the non-existence of Santa Claus. Is he also one of your deities?

Yes, I know this. You are neither the first nor the last to give this sort of juvenile analysis. Let me point out again that this is not what these Gospels are all about. They are “inspired” books written years after Christ died. Anyone who has been informed the basics of psychology or been involved in court cases can tell you that people’s memory is not reliable, even immediately after the even, let alone years after.

Instead of getting your information on TV from Christian fundamentalists, you could try to read up on Catholicism and other mainline Christian faith that don’t hold the Bible to be literally true. In fact, if you have just taken a cursory look at the history of the church, you will learn that the list of the books in the New Testament didn’t crystallize till around year 200-300. There were many “inspired” books around, including a [Book of Judas]. It took a lot of praying and compromising to take the list and decide which one goes into the New Testament. The Catholic Church functioned without a definitive version of the New Testament for a long time. Instead, these books are considered part of the sacred tradition at least by the Catholics. One could even argue that those books made it to the New Testament because they conform to the church teaching of the time.

Why did Christianity succeeded and others withered? To me that is a far more interesting question than the factual nits in the New Testament, written years after the supposed event.

These books contain a core message concerning the nature of sin, repentance, forgiveness and love. That’s the appeal of Christianity and why it lasted and became the most successful religion in the world. Then there are the political factors and accidents of history.
