Once Chinese, always Chinese
芦笛
Having "lived" in the web for more than three years, I have become more cynical than ever. It seems to me that the Chinese is really a hopeless nation indeed.
Many resent me for my use of the word "low life". They did not know the Chinese way of life is a low way of life. Consequently, most of the Chinese people, especially those living abroad, are low lives regardless of their social status. They could be professors, successful businessmen or businesswomen, outstanding professionals, etc, but in their cores, they remain low lives for one simple reason: they are unfortunate to have been brought up in the Chinese society.
Suffices it to have one look next door. In there, Gumi accused 2u2m of "standing astride two boats", a skillful way of accusing him of high treason. Because 2u2m is an American citizen, he has therefore automatically lost his birth right to say something positive about the Chinese government, not to mention to condemn the current Gulf War and the Bush administration. Otherwise, he would be disloyal to his country.
Fair enough. But I just wonder if "taking American citizenship" is actually equivalent to "lao gai" ("reform by forced labor) back in China. Thus, once you get the American passport, you can no longer enjoy freedom of speech, at least part of it.
Needless to point out that this is the typical way of debate adopted by most of the Chinese. Instead of focusing on their opponents' opinions and reasons, they always resort to a magic weapon that is totally irrelevant to the argument. I have long been used to this low way of "intellectual intercourse", but my imagination is too poor for me to foresee that even the opponent's nationality could be used as a powerful weapon to silence him!
Clever, isn't it?
Another example. Yesterday I read an English poster and was deeply impressed. At that moment, I finally understood why Mao's cult of personality had taken place in China. For many Chinese people, they simply need something to worship. In the past, it was the great leader. Now it is Mr Bush. In the old days, it was the communism. Nowadays it is the American social system. Despite the time that has passed, we remain the same in our cores. Above all, there is a basic principle that can never change: you can never think independently and adopt a critical attitude towards what the others are worshipping. Otherwise, you would end up a traitor, deserving only insults.
I sincerely hope that the American authorities should think seriously about tightening up their control over immigration. If they allow the Chinese to immigrate en mass, given their outstanding ability to reproduce, it is very likely that by the end of this century, most Americans would have become low lives.
