Iraq has never followed UN resolution 687 passed in 1991 and 1284 passed in 1999, which required the complete Iraqi disarmament of weapons of mass destruction. Not following these resoluations already constituted the legal base for further UN military actions. From legal point of view, US already had enough legal supports to backup its actions.

And also many Americans are supporting their troops, not the war.
