Murray L. Wax., Indian Americans Unity and Diversity cites (A.L. Kroeber* estimated 1,000,000 at contact.)
Dobyns, H.F. 1976 Native American Historical Demography, U of Indiana, 1976. says anywhere between 900,000 and 12,000,000 depending on which authority you believe.
Jack Forbes of UC Davis has probably written on this subject as well. Try your library for these books or authors.

I think a person needs to have a healthy skepticism when they encounter the low numbers associated with indigenous populations and perhaps the incredibly high numbers (50-100,000,000.) However, native populations were already decimated by imported infectious diseases by the time any significant scientific inquiry had begun in the Americas. The low estimates (1,000,000) probably reflect that bias. The high estimates probably reflect interpolation based on observational notes of explorers. In other words - if you take a census at the county fair (2 people per square yard) and then try to estimate what the rest of the county looks like from that, you would probably have an incredibly exaggerated number. If you take your sample in an unlighted public park at 3 am or at a public school during a holiday you will probably estimate low.

*A.L. Kroeber is a famous academic from Berkeley, CA who is considered one of the preeminent cultural anthropologists. Native people he studied don't always agree with his assessment - my people don't.
