"How does one determine when a matter is "sufficiently settled" so as to justify restrictions on tolerance and thereby, perhaps, participatory democracy? If, for instance, a community wants creationism taught, should this be disallowed because it is a demonstrably false doctrine? If not, must democratic participation leads to irrational action? If so, is this the price we must pay for democracy? The is the conflict between Plato and Aristotle on theoretical knowledge vs. practical wisdom. In more recent terms, e.g. in Rorty, it is the problem of anti-foundationalist pragmatism (social practices) vs. epistemology as the ground of politics."
