I just called the shop to which I sent my PC to be fixed. The diagnosis they made was the same as my friend’s, that is, the arm and the motor of the hard drive are faulty. However, they told me that the data could be retrieved. So they were going to install a new hard drive disk, retrieve the data from the old disk, then copy them back to the newly-installed hard disk. The price sounded quite reasonable so I told them to go ahead. According to them, with a bit of luck, it might be fixed today. I should give them a call later today to see if I could collect it today. If not, then I would be able to collect it tomorrow.
So this seems to be the end of my sad story. Taking this opportunity, may I express my gratitude to everyone who has been so enthusiastic as to give me so many heart-warming suggestions and advices.
Special thanks go to Liu Zhe, who is so kind as to agree to send back all my articles he has collected, to Bo Jioaseng, Wu Ye Youmin, Xiaoji (my dear nephew), Ranran (my lovely niece), NJLY, “reader” and so many others who have given me very useful technical advices. Since there are so many friends who have given me such help, I am sorry I cannot remember everyone’s name. I do apologize if the list above does not include your name.
My thanks also go to Lata daoshi, Ying zi, Suibian, Chi cao de laohu, Xiaoxuesheng, who either expressed concern and gave me some moral support (LTDS & Ying zi) or urged me, in one way or another, to get the machine fixed (suibian, Grass-eating tiger, xiaoxuesheng). I must admit that being lazy-bones, I might have given up fixing the computer, had the latter not provided me with strong stimuli. This was very possible in view of the fact that I found a better life without a computer.
At any rate, I learned one lesson: Life without a computer is of much better quality and a webworm’s life is one of the most miserable sort. Therefore, I am not going to be as crazy as before, writing non-stop. Actually, the reasons why I have my PC fixed are
1) to finish my duel with Gao Han,
2) to have access to public email service so as to communicate with friends, and
3) to revise my articles so as to make them more suitable for publication.
So please do not expect too much from me, guys. I am determined to have a reasonable life, that is, to sleep better, to smoke less, to be irritated or annoyed less often and to spend more leisure time enjoying life. I have slaved for a continuous period of 5 years and am entitled to have a break.
Finally, let’s shout together:
Ten thousand years to the invincible Mao Zedong Thought that has ensured the greatest miracles of retrieving the data from the broken hard disk and of fixing the damn PC!
