ZT: 花開堪折直須折
中國人說到人生苦短，應該及時行樂，往往會引用唐朝杜秋娘兩句說：
「 花 開 堪 折 直 須 折 ， 莫 待 無 花 空 折 枝 。」-----《 金 縷 衣 》
外國人有沒有類似的說法呢？請看英國詩人赫里克 (Robert Herrick)一六四八年寫的詩句：
Gather ye rosebuds while ye may.
Old Time is still a-flying.
And this same flower that smiles today.
Tomorrow will be dying.
玫 瑰 蕾 可 採 , 寄 言 君 採 之 .
自 古 流 光 飄 忽 無 已 時 。
今 日 花 如 笑 ，
明 日 半 枯 凋 。
這 首 《 寄 室 女 — 惜 春 》 (To the Virgins, to Make Much of Time)跟 杜 秋 娘 那 首 《 金 縷 衣 》 不 是 大 同 小 異 嗎 ？ 天下人性本來就是大同小異的 。
和 「花開堪折直須折」 一樣 ， Gather ye rosebuds while ye may 一 語逐漸做了成語. 例如 ： Don't spent all your time working, Tom. You're still young. Gather ye rosebuds while ye may.( 不 要 整 天 只 是 工 作 啊 ， 湯 姆 。 你 還 年 輕 ， 應 該 及 時 行 樂 的 。）

Gather ye rosebuds while ye may 這 句 成 語 ， 出 自 To the Virgins一 詩. 上 文 談 過 了 ； 詩 句 中 的 ye字 是 甚 麼 意 思 呢 ？ 這 裡 不 妨 談 談 。按 古 時 英 語 說 「 你 」 ， 用 thou字 ； 說 「 你 們 」 ， 用 ye字 。 Ye fools！ 即 是 「 你 們 這 些 蠢 材 ！ 」 現 代 英 語 用 you字 代 替 了 thou、 ye， 但 這 兩 個 古 字 在 一 些 成 語 裡 給 保 存 下 來 了， Gather ye rosebuds while ye may 就 是 例 子 。
又 Gather ye rosebuds while ye may 下 面 那 句 Old Time is still a-flying， 句 中 的 a-flying是 甚 麼 意 思 呢 ？ 按 從 前 英 文 會 在 動 詞 或 現 在 分 詞 (present participle)之 前 加 上 a-， 表 示 一 個 動 作 正 在 進 行 。 一 首 英 國 兒 歌 說 Father's gone a-hunting， 就 是 說 「 爸 爸 去 了 打 獵 」 。 這 個 a-的 用 法 ， 在 現 代 英 語 裡 有 時 還 是 可 以 見 到 的.
