So, when I did lens design, most of the time I just edited a spread sheet named merit function editor, and then, everything is up to the computer. From time to time, I was wondering: How were people in Europe able to invent various types of lenses many years ago without a computer ? I have lots of them in the database , and those drawings look so beautiful. People say when a lens drawing looks good, it is good. Mains are sometimes just don’t look so good.
I decided to buy a book and found out what did they do this kind of thing. I went to ebay and bought one published in 1978. At least it was written before most software became available.
