'New poetry by Iranians'

In the early part of 20th century, a poet by the name of Nima Yushij pioneered breaking with the classical meter and rhyme scheme and revolutionized poetry written in the Persian language. Nima's contribution to Persian poetry is roughly equivalent to Whitman's to American poetry.(?) During the three decades it took him to painstakingly plan and execute this change, giving birth to Modern Poetry in Iran - called She'r-r No' or "New Poetry" in Persian - the next generation of poets, including Shamlou, continued Nima's work, not only changing the metric structure of peotry, but removing its limitations altogether, taking it all the way to free verse. Shamlou is widely considered the father of the Free Verse movement in Iranian poetry.
