Seven Columbia students were assaulted in a series of five incidents near the Morningside Heights campus early Sunday morning.
The string of attacks took place between 12:15 a.m. and 12:30 a.m. Sunday morning, all within one block of the main campus. Police said victims were punched in the face or thrown to the ground, though property was removed only in one incident, according to the Columbia Department of
Public Safety. Two students received stitches at St. Luke’s Hospital.
An alert circulated by Public Safety—both posted on its Web site and tacked on campus bulletin boards—on Sunday stated that “a group of five to seven black males ranging in age from 20-25 years old” approached the students in each confrontation. Surveillance photos and video have been released by police, who are asking for public assistance in locating the perpetrators. A single suspect was arrested Sunday night in connection with the assaults, officials said.
Five out of the seven victims were Asian in their late twenties to early thirties, and all were walking either alone or with one other student.
Associate Vice President for Public Safety James McShane characterized the attacks as the exception to a usually secure area. “The 26th Precinct is one of the safest precincts in one of the safest cities in America,” he said. “There’s nowhere that is crime-free.”
Public safety takes “conditions into account” when devising security measures for the area, which routinely include patrolling, McShane said, as will be the case with the assault incidents.
The attacks happened within minutes of each other at West 112th Street and Amsterdam Avenue, West 113th Street and Broadway, West 114th Street and Amsterdam Avenue, West 116th Street and Amsterdam Avenue, and West 120th Street and Amsterdam Avenue.
As the matter is still under investigation, McShane declined to discuss specifics of the incidents.
Marjorie Cohen, executive director of the Westside Crime Prevention Program, advised students not to “panic” in light of recent robbery and assault incidents, but to be alert of their surroundings. Though she cautioned against “blaming the victim,” she said often students are “are not paying attention when out walking.”
“The cell phones and the iPods are a problem because people are just not concentrating,” Cohen said.
“I can’t say that there’s a crime wave or anything, or if there is something really that new,” she added, suggesting that the crimes are limited to a small number of perpetrators. “It only takes one or two people to make a crime rate in this case.”
As of press time, no e-mail had been sent to all University students from Columbia Public Safety. At least two schools’ students were informed via e-mail. Law students received an e-mail on Sunday night, and Barnard students received one on Monday.

UPDATE (4:00 p.m.): Vice President for Public Safety James McShane sent an e-mail to students Wednesday morning confirming that the assaults were perpetrated by the same group and listing several services Public Safety offers students. The Department of Public Safety has increased patrols around the Morningside and Medical Center campuses “in recent months,” McShane wrote.
The message described Public Safety’s “Crime Prevention Initiatives,” including shuttles, a night escort service, and a “Streets Smarts” seminar next week.
“We are in daily contact with the 26th Precinct detectives,” McShane added in the e-mail.
