'About and within me is tranquility
...your image, beloved friend,
and the delight of vanished days move before me; but soon
she (remembrance) yields to sweet hope --
Already I yearn with pain, for the fiery embracing scene,
then for the questions, upon the mysteries of the observed
mutual presence, which by the attitudes, expressions, and
dispositions of a friend are changed since that time --
the known pleasure of old comradeship, which no oath seals,
only to live eternal truth - peace never, never penetrated by
the law which regulates opinions and impulse.
THE NOVEL HYPERION
You walk above in the light,
weightless tread a soft floor, blessed genii!
Radiant the gods' mild breezes
Gently play on you
As the girl artist's fingers
On holy strings.
Fateless the Heavely breathe
Like an unweaned infant asleep;
Chasterly preserved
in modest bud
Forever their minds
Are in flower
And their blissful eyes
Eternally tranquil gaze
Eternally clear.
But we are fated
To find no foothold, no rest,
And suffering mortals
Dwindle and fall
Headlong from one
Hour to the next,
Hurled like water
From ledge to ledge
Downward for years to the vague abyss
