Charges to Be Dropped Against China Protestor

WASHINGTON (AP) - A woman who heckled Chinese President Hu Jintao at a White House ceremony will not face trial on a federal charge in the case.
Wang Wenyi was arrested after the April 20th outburst and charged with intimidating, coercing, threatening and harassing a foreign official. She could have been sentenced to six months in jail and given a $5,000 fine.
Federal prosecutors have deferred prosecution of the case under a diversion agreement offered to first time offenders.
Wang said she is prohibited from confronting all foreign officials over the next year.
Wang interrupted the carefully choreographed event where President Bush (website - news - bio) welcomed Hu to the White House, shouting, "President Bush, stop him from killing," and urged Bush to "stop him from persecuting the Falun Gong." Wang is part of the Falun Gong religious movement, which is banned in China.
