* Lost (1962)
The night is now all quietness. Is this
Before our birth or after our death?
And I holding endlessness or just your hands?
And why are the clouds so nebulous?
You have no name, tonight, I have no name.
In the distance flows the illusion that is time.
Please remain lovely in my eyes and hands.
Never mind the glow-worms and night's westward descent.
Sometimes light years are shorter than an inch,
And all the myths up there within easy reach;
Sometimes the divine can be so benign, as tonight,
And turn the stars into a hair-net on your hair.
How can we tell the Heavenly Stream from our path
While it's misty upstream and downstream?
And how can I remember where we've been going,
And whence exactly did we come?
And so to your eyes I turn my eyes. And what
Do I find there but the same mistiness? So I say,
Eternity here is where all paths end,
Where all directions come to a stand.
Suddenly, all the strange lights around the pole
Start winking their knowing eyes at us,
And up the ladder of midnight leaning for us
We climb together, never a backward glance
At where time was and is and ever shall be.
