Stocks Jump on Hopes Iraq Crisis Near End
Thursday March 13, 4:16 pm ET
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stocks surged on Thursday, with the tech-laden Nasdaq logging its biggest one-day gain since a New Year's rally, as investors were encouraged by signs the Iraqi crisis may be near resolution and snapped up shares that had been beaten down during the uncertainty over war.

"There's some optimism we might be able, if not come to some sort of agreement, at least see some light at the end the tunnel as far as resolution over there in Iraq," said Todd Clark, head of listed trading at Wells Fargo Securities.
The dollar strengthened, gold fell to three-month lows and bonds sold off as investors stepped in to buy tech stocks and beaten-down shares such as American International Group Inc. (NYSE:AIG - News), the world's largest insurer. AIG jumped 6.7 percent, adding $3 to $47.70, after the stock slipped on Wednesday to its lowest intraday level since October 1998.
Semiconductors led the rally in technology shares, with Altera Corp. (NasdaqNM:ALTR - News) gaining more than 12 percent and Nvidia Corp. (NasdaqNM:NVDA - News) climbing nearly 10 percent. Intel Corp.(NasdaqNM:INTC - News), the third-most active stock on Nasdaq, rose 7 percent, or $1.15 to $17.35. The Philadelphia semiconductor index (Philadelphia:^SOXX - News) rose 8 percent, with all 17 of its components, except for Motorola Inc. (NYSE:MOT - News), pushing higher. Motorola fell 3 cents to $8.01.
The tech-laced Nasdaq Composite Index (NasdaqSC:^IXIC - News) jumped 61.54 points, or 4.81 percent, to 1,340.78, according to the latest available data. It was the Nasdaq's biggest single-day gain since a 3.7 percent surge on Jan. 2. The blue-chip Dow Jones industrial average (CBOT:^DJI - News) soared 269.68 points or 3.57 percent to 7,821.75. The broader Standard & Poor's 500 Index (^GSPC - News) climbed 27.71 points or 3.45 percent to 831.90.
Traders said short-covering fueled the market's rise. Short sellers -- investors who sell borrowed stock and hope to buy it back later at a lower price -- covered their short positions by buying shares as the market began to climb. The rally was also attributed to a CNN report late Wednesday that senior Iraqi officials may have begun secret surrender negotiations.
