To be honest, many times I suspect you are really a masochist, enjoying my whipping wholeheartedly. Every time we are enjoying peace, you provoke me to break it. After I start to whip you mercilessly, however, you either flee after a long and loud whistle or fall onto your knees, begging my wife to intervene before I beat you to death. To tell you the truth, I am really sick of your shameless behavior!
But of course I know you are not a masochist. You just miss me, that's all. Wacky says you provokes me deliberately in order for me to come back, but he does not seem to know why. I dare say in this world, only I, your big brother, know why you really want me back.
Having written political essays for a long time, I understand the common problems all these kinds of writers are facing: a lack of inspiration. After you have talked about a variety of topics, eventually the time would come that there is no topic that you have not talked about.
Lao Ma, this is the problem that is torturing you now, isn't it? You have run out of topics. As I have said many times, your brain is just like a shallow well, liable to be dried. Indeed, the past a few years have been your "dry seasons" during which you have produced literally nothing. Even the latest piece on "skepticism" was inspired by my "China Needs the Pain in the Bottom". Poor guy, I can imagine how you feel right now: anxiety, panicking and desperation.
No wonder you want me to stay. But I am truly sorry, brother, I will never change my mind. Nonetheless, since you are my little brother, I feel obliged to help you as much as possible.
Here is my proposal: Let's have a truce. You don't provoke me, and I don't whip you. In the mean time, I will provide you with some inspiration to keep you going so that you can, rather safely, pretend to be a writer. How about that?
Here are the topics that have recently occurred to me. I believe you can use them to compose a few nice articles:
1) International affairs.
a) Why did the Bush administration not wipe out Saddam's crack troops and topple his regime during the Gulf war? What prevented them from doing so? Are those reasons still present today? If so, how could the new Bush government ignore them? What would be the consequences?
b) Terrorism and the Sino-America relationship
What opportunities has the international terrorism presented to the Chinese government for them to improve and develop the relationship between China and America?
In a sense, the Middle East terrorists are the saviors of China. Had it not been for them, the communist China would have become the number 1 enemy of America. The Chinese government is shrewd enough to seize this opportunity. As a result, the two countries are now in a "semi-honeymoon". It benefits China a great deal, as it gives the government a free hand to deliver a fatal blow to the separationists in Xinjiang. Similarly, the North Koreans are doing China a great favor.
In this situation, the task for the Chinese government is to exploit these precious chances and forge an even better relationship with America. Forget Taiwan for the time being. Once China becomes a good partner or sub-ally of the USA, the strategic status of China would be tremendously strengthened. Only this is the proper way to handle the territorial disputes with Japan and to solve the Taiwan problem eventually.
2) Domestic affairs
How is Hu Jintao to distinguish himself from his predecessor? The initial signals are alarming. Will Hu become another Bolezhnev that turns back the clock set by Khrushchev?
See? I have so many ideas that can be turned into political essays of the first class. For me, inspiration has never been a problem. So if you agree to have a truce with me, I can be your ghost-writer like He Wen, feeding your bleak brain with inexhaustible ideas. Unlike He Wen though, I will not ask my name to be attached to any pieces, because it is my duty to look after you, my useless little brother.
Think about it, Lao Ma. Big Brother is watching you
