The reason why there are so many Chinese people that get hooked to the web, as I see it, is that they treat the web as their umbilical cords through which they suck nutrients from the culture they have left behind. So addiction to the web is actually very similar to addiction to drugs. A drug-addict also lives in a phony world or his/her dream. Is that something healthy and normal? I don't think so.
Allow me to tell you the plain truth, the web provides different users with various things. For some, it is an ideal place to insult (or in their own words, "to play with") others, fearing no punishment.
For others, they just find a place to fulfill their lost dreams. This is my case. As I told everyone in the preface of my column in qiqi.com, my lost dream is to be a writer.
For yet another group, they were unfortunate enough to marry foreign spouses who share very little with them in culture. So they are in the terrible status of cultural starvation and thirst and have to turn to the web to kill the hunger and quench the thirst.
So, in general, most of addicts are miserable creatures. Like fish trapped in a dry ditch, they willingly take the remaining muddy water for the vast ocean from which they escaped.
Now you are telling me they are neither psychos nor idiots! What they can find from the web? Even the so-called "master" (gao shou) turns out not to have the minimal ability to organize his thoughts as competently as a high school boy does!
