First of all, please don't tell me that there should be an article "the" before "9th". I copied this translation from the book "The falling leaves" by a Chinese lady whose name I can't remember. The book is a bestseller. So any mistakes in there must have been corrected. But I do know that it can't be used here because you are no one's sister. Actually, "Juijiie" is just a common name of Chinese girls, like "Fengjie" in the Dream in the Red Chamber.
Enough garbage. Anyway, I kept my words. So the first thing I did this morning was printing out that piece, highlighting the bits that you reckon were not grammatically correct, and showing it to a colleague who is very well-educated.
Gosh! I know you will correct me again, arguing that I should say: "the first THINGS I did this morning WERE", but please hold on for a moment.
He read it through and, as I had expected, laughed heartily, then asked me: "What's this? Who wrote it? Is it a letter or something?"
Of course I could not tell him the truth. So I lied to him, saying that it was a letter I wrote to a friend. He said it was really funny and asked if there were more jokes like that. So I went back to my office, printed out my response to Mr Joke and showed it to him. This time he almost laughed his head off, saying: "Great idea! Go and get yourself sterilized, then every girl would rush to you! Ha! Ha! I've never thought about this! It's really a clever trick, isn't it? So simple and yet so effective! Thank you for telling me the secret!"
Then I asked him whether he had found grammar mistakes. He said he had not paid much attention. So I pointed out the highlighted bits. His answers are as follows:
"more than one wives"
He ponders for a long while, then he says, in general, people normally say "more than one wife". But, in theory, since it refers to several objects, it should really be "more than one wives". Then he says, "but as you know, we never follow the rules. So most people would say 'more than one wife'".
So you are right in this case, 9th Sis. I was wrong, and I do apologize to the readers who might have been misled by me.
"It's just the worst nightmare".
Your correction is "it would be the worst nightmare". He says either expression is correct. The difference between the two is that my expression sounds more certain than yours. In other words, yours sounds more polite whilst mine reads more straightforward.
My feeling is that since "it" here refers to "having children". This is a judgement, not a hypothesis. So there is no need to use subjunctive mood here.
"The best thing a man can do is to"
He says I am correct. It is just one thing consisting of several actions, not many things. He says: " If your friend were right, then you would have to say, 'to seduce a girl ARE to lure her into your bedroom, take her clothes off, and have sex with her'. That would be ridiculous!"
"go sterilize yourself"
As I said, I am correct, 9th Sis. I am really sorry about this.
So I guess that's it then. Again, I do apologize for the mistake I have made and hope nobody has been misled. I would also like to express my gratitude for your help, 9th Sis.
Finally, I would like to ask, very humbly, for a great favor from my dear 9th Sis: Please don't try to correct me again and tell me that I should use "he said" rather than "he says". Thanks ever so much!
