影片根据日本著名作家森村诚一小说《人性的证明》改编。
美国黑人青年焦尼被人杀寄存器，东京警署派栋居和横渡到克里兹味去调查，但作为历史人证的阿仲太太刚被人杀害。二人又找到阿仲的表妹才得到一点线索。栋居随线索到纽约黑人区找到焦尼奄奄一息的父亲，这才弄清焦尼到东京是找其母八杉恭子。这个已经发迹而名扬全国的八杉恭子，唯恐泄露自己的底细竟把亲生儿子杀死。正当警署决定逮捕八杉恭子时，她已自尽。影片结尾时响起了这首歌。
