I read a book about the 1st and second campaign about ten years ago ("Black Snow"). It was the first of the kind that came out in 1990s and its description of the incident should be closer to what actually happened. The book says that the bombing happened around 9-9:30 am, by the time when Xiao Mao just got up (I don't know how many CCP officers would have the luxury to get up that late in Korea). He went to one of the warmer rooms with stoves and laid a can of food to heat up. The author never suggested Mao was the one that exposed CCP HQ to the US air force. He mentioned that there was a RECON plane flying around CCP HQ the day before. Hong XueZhi realized that there might be an air raid coming the second day. He actually dragged Marshall Peng into a bunker in the morning. But no one notified Xiao Mao about the upcoming danger. While waiting for the food to warm up, he put his head over his arms on a table and got back to sleep again (who else would be able to get away with this kind of behavior in peace time, let alone in the war). When the air raid came, it was just like Han said, instead of getting out of the burning house, Xiao Mao ducked himself under the table with another staff officer named Gao. Both were killed.
Books that came out later and in recent years described a more heroic Xiao Mao instead of the one that humbling over the table sleeping while being bombed. But I think this one is more creditable.
