据报道"no trouble making"是季羡林的Version.请看新华社的英文报道:

"Bu zheteng" -- almost impossible to translate

BEIJING, Jan. 20 (Xinhuanet) -- A spontaneous discussion online has interested a great many in China lately searching for a happy translation of the Chinese phrase "bu zheteng," a colloquial expression used by Chinese President Hu Jintao and almost impossible to translate into any other language.

On Dec. 18, Chinese President Hu Jintao used a colloquial phrase "bu zheteng" -- or do not "zheteng" -- in his speech delivered at a grand gathering marking the 30th anniversary of the reform and opening-up drive.

His words drew understanding laughter from the audience in the Great Hall of the People. "Zheteng" is from a northern Chinese dialect, but rarely used by officials in a formal occasions.

In his speech, Hu said: "Don't sway back and forth, relax our efforts or get sidetracked, but firmly push forward the reform and opening-up as well as adhere to socialism with Chinese characteristics. In that way, we will definitely achieve our grand blueprint and ambitious objectives (on realizing modernization in the middle of the 21st century)," according to a Xinhua story.

While the public and the media are discussing the notion of "bu zheteng," the translation of the phrase becomes an intriguing challenge to bilingual experts and grass-root translators since it is hard to render.

In an article published on the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Monday, Chinese ambassador to Namibia Ren Xiaoping suggested a version she believes is most appropriate: "avoid self-inflicted setbacks."

Some other translations include "don't flip flop," "don't sway back and forth," "no dithering," "no major changes," "avoid futile actions," "stop making trouble and wasting time" and "no self-consuming political movements."

But none of these translations is generally accepted since they do not convey the ideas of "chaos" and "self-consumption" associated with the word "zheteng."

Even though one month has passed since the phrase was used by Hu, the search does not abate. Days ago, to the surprise of all, Ji Xianlin, a world-class Chinese linguist and translator, gave his version: "no trouble making" which really reads and sounds simple, straight and swift.

Despite the difficulty to translate the phrase, the use of the colloquial expression in an official speech is welcomed by the general public because of its affability.

Some praised that the phrase shows the "wisdom of the Communist Party of China," and "points out the direction for China in the future."
