The island structure is formally called superstructure.
midway(kitty-hawk) might be the biggest among conventional carrier, while neuclear powered carriers doubled the displacement of that, normally over 100,000 tons. New carriers may have less aircrafts, it is becuase new aircrafts are bigger than old ones. The current data link can achieve controling hundreds aircrafts easily, even they are from different branches: navy, marine, or airforce.
US Navy keeps at least one conventional carrier for operations near Japan, because Japanese constitution forbids neuclear whatsoever in her territory. For the possible neuclear armment on a conventional carrier, Navy's policy is No Comments.
Midway phased out partly because it behaved weired after renovation. Where is it now? it doesn't look like San Dieago.
