Life is not fair...fairer than you'd believed in the end. So do not pretend that anyone has the right to condescending on others good fortune no matter how miserable your own sorry ass feel at any moment of your life. GOD is great in every way.
"That same summer, like so many summers and winters before, I was longing for romance, something that seemed always to elude me; and again, inside me, some fatalistic voice said, "She'll never come along. You'll never find her. You'll never get married." And in fact, this voice was closer to being right. It took far, far longer. Although there were a few sad and near misses along the way, it took another fifteen hellish, love-bleak years before I finally did find her, I finally did marry her, we finally did establish a little loving family of four. Like most couples, Carol and I slowly had to adjust to the reality of each other, and there were some tough times in our first years. But we loved each other deeply and worked things out, and in the end, it was as beautiful as we both had hoped. To use a haunting phrase of Carol's own, what we had was 'once in a blue, blue moon".
And in a way, so it has been with this book. As I have been coming closer and closer to finishing it, a nasty little inner voice in me has been saying,"You'll never finish this book. You'll get run by a bus before it's done." And yet somehow, miraculously, I finally have finished this book. I made it without being run over by a bus; Carol, though, did not. In December of 1993, hit from out of left field by a strange and eerie malady with the disgusting name of Glioblastoma multiforme, she died, vanishing from our midst almost as suddenly as if she had in fact been hit by a bus, with so much of life still left in her and before her. So much still to give, so many joys still to taste, all cut short by some cell gone wrong. Life is so very unfair."
