It is quite possible that Marx himself did not like such terms as "dialectical materialism" or "historical materialism." Be that as it may, it doesn't make his theory any better.
In his early years, he was very much influenced by Hegel and could be regarded as part of the young Hegelian movement. In his more mature works, you can still find evidence of such Hegelian influences, for example, Marx still considered dialectics as "scientific" in his later works.
The emphasis on "history" (which Hegel conceived as the "unfolding of the Spirit") is one of the distinctive characteristics of Marx's theory. Marx seemed to think he had successfully "stood Hegel on his head" by incorporating the idea of French materialism which, if memory serves, is completely mechanistic and deterministic (e.g. Pierre-Simon Laplace's so-called "causal determinism").
One can only say that the combination of different questionable "metaphysics" resulted in the disastrous notion of "historical inevitability" which is the hallmark of Marx's self-proclaimed "scientific" theroy.
Marx's analysis of capitalism is fatally flawed because of other questionable assumptions as such. A case in point is the "labor theory of value," which is simply mistaken because scarce resources do have intrinsic values regardless of the contribution of human labor. Likewise, the doctrine of "falling rates of profit" was likely based on Marx's own biased observations.
To sum up, do not waste precious time trying to "save Marx from the Marxists". It is not worth it.
