I don’t think the old imperial system was as stable as you are portraying. The late emperors of the Han and East-Han dynasties were puppets with little political power. Many emperors of the middle and late Tang dynasty didn’t fair any better either. The Song dynasty was preceded with a few short lived dynasties that all ended by usurpers from the military and the first emperor of Song was a usurper also. There you have it: Mao’s “Political power comes from the barrels of guns” in action. The situation improved a bit during and after the Song dynasty perhaps due to the rise of a new creed of Confucianism. The “mandate of heaven” was difficult to establish, but once established, would last a long time and then end with slow erosion both internal and external.
