Mansfield, Ohio Debates Pit Bull Ban
January 11, 2003- Responsible dog owners in Mansfield Ohio are urging the city to drop a ban on pit bulls and other breeds that has been in place since 1988. The city of Mansfield contracts its animal control services to the Richland County Dog Warden. In late 2002, the Richland County Dog Warden proposed a 'crackdown' on pit bulls, citing an increase in the number of pit bulls in the city, as well as reports of organized dog fighting.
Dog fighting is a felony, prosecuted under Ohio Criminal Code, and has no bearing on Mansfield's dangerous and vicious dog law.
Mansfield is an ideal example of why breed bans do not work. If the ban on American Pit Bull Terriers, American Staffordshire, Staffordshire terriers and mixed breeds had worked as intended, there would be no pit bulls in the city. Thus, no need to go hunting for pit bulls as suggested by the Richland County Dog Warden.
